Documentary Wedding Photography

As well as my  classical wedding photography  I love to photograph weddings in an organic, candid and documentary style.

Everyone has a story to tell and every wedding has one of the most beautiful stories ever told. When I am photographing a wedding in this style, I like to think of myself as your story teller, your own personal journalist, capturing your wedding day moments.

I deliver all my couples’ photos in both color and black and white, but there’s something about black and white that truly enhances the raw, documentary feel of a moment. That’s why I’ve chosen to showcase my documentary wedding gallery in timeless black and white photographs.

Vermont Photo Journalistic, Documentary Style Wedding Photography

Documentary wedding photography is the art of storytelling through a collection of individual images that depict genuine, emotional moments throughout your wedding day. As a documentary and fine art wedding photographer, I usually give my couples both documentary/candid style images and those “wow” editorial photos as well unless they ask differently.

Formal family portraits and an editorial romance session are often a small part of the wedding coverage and to be honest, I prefer to fade into the background, to capture moments as they happen. So often I have heard from my wedding couples: “We didn’t even notice you were there!.”

However, even with formal photos I will work with my couples, the wedding party and the families to ensure natural-looking results. I often give cue words for actions rather than just “posing” and make suggestions so even the traditional wedding images look natural. For instance I might say “John give Mary a kiss on the cheek” and then I will say “Mary, don’t let him.” or on a more tender note: “Mary, what is it about John  that makes you feel safe?”  All these little cues and suggestion helps my couples forget I am there and naturally interact with each other.

But, documentary wedding photography is not just taking a few candid photos on the wedding day. Documentary photography tells the story of your wedding day with those “decisive moments” taken throughout the entire day from the getting ready photo to those crazy “blackmail” worthy dance moves.
