Documentary Wedding Photography

Timeless Wedding Photography | Candid & Documentary Storytelling

Photographing weddings across Vermont, New Hampshire, Upstate New York, and throughout New England, this approach is rooted in candid, documentary storytelling—capturing moments as they naturally unfold with honesty, energy, and connection.

Working in an immersive, in-the-moment way—more like friends with cameras than observers—I’m right there within the day as it happens, documenting what is real while allowing everything to unfold naturally.

Alongside this, a refined editorial eye shapes a small number of composed portraits, creating a balanced collection that feels both real and elevated. The result is imagery that reflects not just how your wedding looked, but how it was lived.

What Is Documentary Wedding Photography?

Documentary wedding photography—also known as wedding photojournalism—focuses on capturing the real, unposed moments of your day as they naturally unfold. Think spontaneous laughter, heartfelt hugs, joyful tears, and quiet in-between glances you didn’t even know were happening.

As your visual storyteller, I work discreetly in the background, observing with an artistic eye and photographing your wedding as a true narrative—preserving not just how it looked, but how it felt.

Why Black and White?

All of my couples receive their full wedding gallery in both color and black & white, but there’s a reason I showcase my documentary wedding gallery entirely in timeless black and white:
It’s emotion, distilled.
Black and white photography removes distractions, draws your eye to the heart of the moment, and highlights genuine connection and feeling. It’s raw, powerful, and timeless.

Is This Style Right for You?

If you’re a couple who values:

  • Authentic storytelling over posed perfection

  • Candid emotion and natural connection

  • A relaxed photography experience that allows you to be fully present on your day

…then documentary-style wedding photography may be the perfect fit.

Vermont Genuine & Natural Documentary Wedding Photography

Honest, Heartfelt Storytelling Through Documentary Wedding Photography

Documentary wedding photography is more than just snapping a few candid shots—it's the art of storytelling through a series of authentic, emotional images that capture the true essence of your wedding day. As a Vermont-based documentary and fine art wedding photographer, I specialize in capturing genuine moments as they unfold—unscripted, emotional, and deeply personal—while also creating a few breathtaking editorial-style portraits worthy of a magazine spread (unless you request otherwise!).

Of course, we’ll set aside time for the formal family portraits and a relaxed romantic session, but for most of the day, I work quietly in the background, allowing your story to unfold naturally. In fact, one of the things I hear most from couples is, “We didn’t even notice you were there!” — and that’s exactly the point.

Even during the formal photos, I use gentle prompts and playful direction to encourage natural interaction—never stiff poses. For instance, I might say, “John, give Mary a kiss on the cheek,” followed by, “Mary, don’t let him!” or on a more tender note, “Mary, what is it about John that makes you feel safe?” These little cues help you forget the camera is there and bring out real emotions.

Documentary wedding photography is about capturing the entire emotional arc of your day—from the quiet anticipation of getting ready, to the laughter and joy of your ceremony, to the epic dance floor moments you’ll never forget. Every moment matters, and your final gallery will reflect the full, unscripted beauty of your celebration.
